WET THROUGH TOMORROW: A line of strong storms continues to drop southward across Central Alabama; rain cooler air now covers the northern half of the state with only scattered areas of light rain. Temperatures are in the 70s behind the band of storms. Any risk of strong to severe storms this afternoon will remain over the southern half of Alabama, where the air remains unstable.

John Brown, our Skywatcher in Mountain Brook, reports 1.96″ of rain since midnight, and I would imagine other totals around here are similar with our pre-dawn storms, and the batch that moved through at midday. We will maintain a good chance of showers and storms tonight and tomorrow as a surface boundary pushes in this direction, aided by a very strong upper trough for the middle of summer developing over the eastern third of the nation. An additional one inch of rain is likely, with some spots getting heavier amounts. The rain should pretty much taper off by late tomorrow afternoon as dry air moves in from the north.

VERY NICE WEEKEND: We are still forecasting an amazingly nice weekend for Alabama, with sunny days, clear cool nights, and low humidity levels. Highs in the mid 80s, lows around 60 by Sunday and Monday morning. Very close to record lows, and we expect 50s for the cooler spots across the northern half of the state. We might even see some 50s down into South Alabama. The dry weather should continue into early next week.

VOODOO LAND: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and the GFS puts a nasty 5940 meter heat bubble over us as we begin the month of August… let’s hope that disappears on the next few runs. We can sure be thankful for this good rain we are getting now; the soil moisture will help keep the heat in check next month.
