RIGHT NOW: Temperatures are generally in the 85 to 89 degree range across Alabama this afternoon, with dewpoints in the 60s. Looks and feels like a summer day, but the upper ridge remains over the state keeping us dry. Active weather continues well to the west and north; a tornado watch is in effect now for parts of Indiana and Ohio.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge will break down a bit tomorrow, allowing a weak surface boundary to approach Alabama from the north. Surface based CAPE values are expected to rise into the 2000 to 3000 j/kg range by late afternoon, and any outflow boundary from the north could trigger showers and a few strong storms. The best chance of these will be over the Tennessee Valley, but we might find some as far south as I-20. It will be a hot day as both the NAM and the GFS are printing 90 for Birmingham tomorrow.
The front will stall out somewhere around the Alabama/Tennessee border Saturday, keeping us in a moist airmass, meaning a chance of scattered showers and storms over the weekend. While the best chance of a shower or storm will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a morning or nighttime shower in a few spots. I would not call it a rainy weekend, but just keep in mind we will have to dodge the summer-like showers and storms that do pop up. We stay warm with highs mostly in the mid 80s Saturday and Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: Showers and storms will become more numerous Monday and Monday night as an upper trough moves in from the west. Then, dry air moves into the state Tuesday, and the rest of the week will be dry and pleasant. Seems like the high most days next week will be in the 79 to 82 degree range, exactly at average values for mid to late May in Alabama.
