RIGHT NOW: SPC continues a severe thunderstorm watch for much of West And North Alabama until 9:00 p.m… showers and storms have moved into Northwest Alabama, but so far no severe weather has been reported in Alabama.
This is clearly a marginal situation… surface based CAPE values are generally under 500 j/kg, there is very little low level helicity, and wind fields are rather weak as well. Most of the warnings have come out of Central and South Mississippi where instability levels are a little higher. We might see a warning or two, but again, a big severe weather issue looks unlikely for Alabama.
The main round of showers and storms will come from now until 10:00 p.m… lingering showers over East Alabama will exit the state soon after midnight.
HOW MUCH RAIN: The NAM is now printing 1.11″ for Birmingham, with the wetter at 1.74″. Looks like rain amounts of one inch are likely, with isolated amounts to 1.75″.
TOMORROW: The sky becomes partly sunny tomorrow as drier air works into the state. But, the day will be considerably cooler with a high only around 60… parts of the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama won’t make it out of the 50s with clouds lingering much of the day up that way. A deep upper low north of Nashville might bring a few showers to extreme North Alabama, but for now we don’t expect any down this way. We drop into the upper 30s by daybreak Wednesday.
WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: We warm into the upper 60s Wednesday with a good supply of sunshine, and then we go really warm on Thursday and Friday with highs around 80 both days along with a mostly sunny sky.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: The warm weather continues into the weekend… highs at or over 80 degrees on Saturday and Sunday with a partly to mostly sunny sky both days. A mini preview of summer if you will.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: A cold front will pass through on Tuesday of next week (March 22) with a chance of showers and storms, but the main upper support will be far to the north, so severe weather issues for now look rather unlikely. And, while we turn a little cooler by the middle of next week, the really cold air stays north. See the Weather Xtreme video for more on long range ideas.
