The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

Don’t be misled by the title. It looks like the Eastern US ridge could be breaking down over the next week allowing the Southeast to see a more typical summertime pattern with daily shower chances, more so than we’ve seen the last few days.

Today, however, I think we will be dry. While an isolated shower is always a possibility in the heat of the afternoon, I doubt that many of us will see one of those. Across South Alabama, the possibility for a shower is a bit higher as we’ve seen the last couple of days. And temperatures will once again be into the 90s for highs.

The ridge does breakdown on Tuesday and is nudged a bit further east by the strong trough that has been nearly anchored over the Rockies. It was another stormy day and night yesterday with 58 reports of tornadoes including one just south of Chicago. Fortunately, I saw no reports of major damage and no deaths from the storms.

Storms will rage again today across the Central Plains and I’m certain those folks are probably tired of the severe weather threat day after day. That threat will shift further east by Tuesday but returns with another strong trough over the western US by midweek.

The ridge builds in across the Southeast US again on Wednesday and Thursday. The next trough will begin butting heads with the eastern US ridge on Friday and could break it down substantially if the GFS is right. By Sunday the ridge is really broken down allowing a front to sag into the Tennessee River Valley. That boundary could be the element we need for a focus to help generate storms across the area. But they will still be convective, so not everyone will get a storm.

The tropics are quiet from Africa to the Gulf.

The GFS promises that the longer range pattern will be more summer-ish with nearly daily shower possibilities as it maintains a trough over the eastern US and shifts the ridge over the Rockies.

Thanks for staying tuned to the Weather Xtreme Video. James Spann will be back bright and early tomorrow morning with the next edition. I hope you have a great Sunday. God bless.
