BEACH BOUND? Be sure and scroll down for the 2010 version of “Spann’s Best Way To The Bama Beaches”… I love this time of the year. For us, today was the last day of school. Time to have a little fun.
RIGHT NOW: Strong storms are moving southward through West Alabama; they are moving into the Fayette area as I write this, and the cluster of storms will impact West Tuscaloosa County and East Pickens County by 4:00. These storms are most likely producing small hail and gusty winds, but they are just under severe limits as I write this (severe storms must have 1” diameter hail or winds of 58 mph). The eastern half of the state is relatively dry, although a few isolated showers have formed over Northeast Alabama. Like recent days, these showers and storms will fade away late tonight.
TOMORROW: We believe much of the day tomorrow will be dry, but showers and storms could begin to increase tomorrow night as an upper low develops over Alabama. The high tomorrow will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, much like today. The NAM is the most aggressive model with showers and storms tomorrow night; the GFS is fairly dry.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: The upper low will bring a chance of scattered showers and storms on a daily basis Saturday through Monday. The sky will be occasionally cloudy, and highs over the weekend will be mostly in the mid 80s. No doubt there will be some rain delays at outdoor venues like the SEC baseball tournament going on at Regions Park, but the days won’t be a total wash-out. While the most numerous showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a few nighttime or morning showers as well with the ULL hanging around here.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Showers and storms should thin out during the middle of next week, and if you watch the Weather Xtreme video, you can see our cool upper trough that has been showing up in the June 4-7 time frame has vanished from the 12Z run. Not surprising considering this is summer in Alabama.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
