RADAR CHECK: Widely scattered showers and storms have formed across Alabama this afternoon; at 3:00 the heaviest was over southern Sumter County in West Alabama, south of York and west of Demopolis. Others were near Smith Lake… the showers and storms are moving to the southeast slowly, and most of these will fizzle out tonight after the sun goes down. Temperatures at 3:00 include 89 at Birmingham, 91 at Anniston, and 93 at Tuscaloosa.

TOMORROW: This day looks relatively dry and hot. We can’t rule out a shower in a few spots tomorrow afternoon, but we are basically between two systems with subsiding air. Most places reach the low 90s tomorrow; maybe some mid 90s in West Alabama. To the west a significant severe weather outbreak is likely tomorrow afternoon over much of Oklahoma and into southern Kansas, where SPC maintains a moderate risk of severe weather.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: A rather vigorous upper trough for late May and early June will impact Alabama with a good round of showers and storms. Looks like the main window for rain comes from about 6:00 p.m. Thursday through 3:00 p.m. Friday.

SPC maintains a slight risk of severe weather for about the northern half of Alabama Thursday night; 12Z model data still suggests the main threat will come from hail and strong, gusty winds as the better helicity values remain well to the north. On the positive side, rain amounts of at least one inch are likely, which is a good thing for a dusty and rather dry state. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.

WONDERFUL WEEKEND: Our weather Saturday and Sunday looks superb. Sunny days, clear cool nights, and low humidity with a high in the low to mid 80s Saturday, and in the 87 to 90 degree range Sunday.

GULF COAST WEATHER: For tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday, about 4 to 6 hours of sun daily with scattered showers and storms on the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. For now the weekend looks dry with a good supply of sunshine Saturday and Sunday. Highs will remain in the 80s for the next 7 days, and sea water temperatures are generally in the low to mid 80s.

We should stay dry Monday, then we will bring back the chance of widely scattered showers and storms by Tuesday and Wednesday.

BERYL: The tropical depression is near Waycross, Georgia this afternoon, and is moving east, away from Alabama. The center of the system will be back over the Atlantic by late tomorrow night. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record tonight’s episode tonight at 8:30 p.m. CDT… and it will be produced with video for the first time. I will post a link to the live stream here on the blog.
