While not over, the severe weather threat seems to have decreased in the past hour. Wind shear remains high, and an isolated high wind report or tornado is still not out of the question, but instability continues to slowly decrease ahead of the storms, especially in north and central Alabama.

However, the storms have made it to Birmingham, and heavy rain will continue to spread across the Birmingham metropolitan area over the next hour. Radar indicates that some areas along the Warrior River in western Jefferson county have already received near 1″ of rainfall (see report from Gorgas below), and many spots will see at least an inch of rain tonight.

And, there is plenty of lightning with the storms!

In north Alabama, it looks like another gravity wave moved through earlier this evening, possibly changing the storms somewhat. Check out pressure trace from Decatur…rapid drop in pressure followed by rapid rise. Wind reports over 40 mph up there (according to Andy Kula at NWS Huntsville), but not sure if this is wave-related or storm related.
