We just got a note from the Storm Prediction Center and they anticipate a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for North and Central Alabama within the next two hours–probably before 4 o’clock.
Practically the entire state is under a Slight Risk area.
This still does not mean that everybody will get rain.
Thunderstorms were developing at 2:25 this afternoon in East-Central Alabama, mainly along the Clay/Talladega line and a few along the Walker/Winston County line and a few over the NW corner.
Meanwhile, off to our east, thunderstorms were more numerous over North Georgia. Some of those are going to migrate toward the SW and enter NE Alabama.
You can almost be assured that the main thunderstorms will be overdosing on lightning and a few of thunderstorms will become severe. Lightning is not a criteria for severe thunderstorms. Officially severe means gusts to 50 knots (58 mph) or greater and hailstones 3/4-inch in diameter or greater.
Keep in touch. We will have frequent updates all afternoon and much of the night.
This is going to be one of those 10-cup coffee days.
