MOIST AIR RETURNS: We are in the midst of an airmass change over our state; the cool, dry continental air is being replaced by the maritime tropical air that is what we expect in mid-summer. And, a nice cluster of showers and storms has formed over West Alabama. Rain is coming down heavily in spots over Tuscaloosa, Fayette, and Walker counties as I write this update. The models are slowly catching on to the MCV (mesoscale convective vortex) over Arkansas that is helping to produce showers and storms across the southern U.S. We will have to maintain a decent chance of showers and storms through tomorrow statewide.
THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: At this point it looks like these three days will be relatively dry, with only widely scattered showers at best. The GFS keeps the northern half of the state in drier air, with afternoon highs back in the low 90s, where they should be this time of the year. It will sure feel more like summer.
SUNDAY AND EARLY NEXT WEEK: The chance of showers and storms should increase again late in the weekend and into the first few days of next week, as deeper moisture returns to North Alabama, and a weak surface boundary stalls out over the northwest corner of the state. Highs will drop back into the upper 80s because of the clouds and showers.
TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Two little areas we need to mention. The closest one to South Florida was over the Northern Bahama Islands. Surface pressures remain high. No sign of organization at this time. NHC estimates less than a 30% chance of that becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. A tropical wave was over the East Caribbean. Upper level winds remain unfriendly for development. See the Weather Xtreme for all of the graphics and details. Now, we talk beach weather…
In places like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Destin, a few thunderstorms are possible tomorrow and scattered ones for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day will have about a 1 in 3 chance of seeing one at any one place. High temperatures of 90-92 inland, but upper 80s on the immediate coast.
