RIGHT NOW: As expected, dry air has shut down showers and storms over much of North and East Alabama, but strong storms have formed along the boundary roughly along U.S. 82 over West and Central Alabama. Some of the heavier storms at 3:30 are over Tuscaloosa, Greene, Hale, Perry, and Bibb Counties, and the best chance of strong storms will remain along and south of U.S. 82 for the rest of the evening.

You can clearly see the airmass difference by looking at surface observations… the dew point at Gadsden is only 66, but surges to 76 at Montgomery (3:00 obs).

Showers and storms over West Alabama will end once the sun goes down later this evening.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Looks like the moist air pulls northward tomorrow, so we will mention a mix of sun and clouds with a chance of scattered showers and storms statewide. The high should be in the low 90s. Friday still looks relatively dry with only a slim risk of a shower.

OUR WEEKEND: Scattered showers and storms will remain possible both Saturday and Sunday, and it still looks like the best coverage of thunderstorms will come Sunday when a strong surface front for summer will move into the state. We reach the low 90s Saturday, but many places will probably fail to reach 90 Sunday due to the increase in clouds and showers.

NEXT WEEK: Look for bright sunny weather Monday and Tuesday with lower humidity levels and cooler nights. Some of the normally cooler spots across Northeast Alabama might reach the upper 50s early Tuesday morning… a sure sign that fall can’t be too far away. Highs should be mostly in the upper 80s. Moisture returns Wednesday along with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

TROPICS: Nothing really exciting across the Atlantic basin… although a disturbance over the Eastern Atlantic, southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, has a chance of getting it’s act together in coming days. Most models take this north of the Leeward Islands in five days, and more than likely at that high latitude position it will recurve before having a chance of threatening the East Coast of the U.S. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
