A weak disturbance moving through the upper flow generated showers across Central Alabama overnight – especially during the early morning hours. Rainfall was pretty widespread, but rainfall amounts were relatively light with most locations getting less than three tenths of an inch. A few locations may have seen amounts over 1 inch but those were pretty isolated. That rain was certainly welcome and has helped to stabilize the atmosphere for the time being. However, the next impulse will probably not get here until this afternoon, so the atmosphere will have some time to recover.
That next impulse is already generating showers over Texas, so it is going to be interesting to see how it moves today. It’s possible that the races at Talladega will go on as scheduled without any rain problems, but it will be a nip and tuck race between the race and the weather. I think there is a pretty good chance they’ll be able to get the race in as planned.
The surface low is projected to move pretty quickly from Mississippi to New York bringing the front through and ending our rain chances by early, early Monday morning. The SPC has taken Alabama out of the slight risk area for severe weather which seems reasonable. Of course, we’ll want to take a look at the sounding from the Shelby County Airport this morning to see how things look. The combination of the rain this morning and lapse rates that are not anticipated to be very strong should result in reduced chances for widespread severe weather. It will still be possible for isolated storms to produce marginally severe weather with hail and damaging wind the most likely possibilities.
Our weather cools off dramatically for Monday and Tuesday with Tuesday likely to be the coolest morning. Looks like lows will be in the lower 40s, but remember that we are not a one number place. Some spots will drop into the upper 30s, so patchy frost will be possible in those normally colder spots.
Wednesday and Thursday should be great days as the temperatures moderate with highs back into the upper 70s by the end of the week. Our next shot at rain comes Friday with the next weather system. The GFS is a bit more aggressive with the next system bringing it through Central Alabama by very early Saturday paving the way for a great weekend.
Peeking into voodoo country brings the prospect for rain around the 7th and then the pattern seems to flatten out through much of the rest of that week.
Still enjoying Chicago as my daughter and I took in the Shedd Aquarium yesterday. Weather turned much colder here and the weather helped Chicago live up to it’s reputation as the windy city. I really had to hold onto my hat as we walked along. I hope that you have a great Sunday. God bless.
