The flooding situation in the Birmingham area will get better later today as the storms move out, but in the short-term, some spots in the western part of the city are facing water up to car doors. It could get worse if Village Creek gets much higher. Here’s the latest hydrograph from the Avenue W flood gage:

The heaviest rain ended at this place around 6:45 AM, but it’s taken a few hours for all of the run-off to get into the creek. It’s in flood stage now, and according to the NWS, if it hits 12 feet we could see major flooding. Follow the flood graph here from the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service.
Heavy rain is ending in Jefferson County now except over Hoover, and heavy storms will continue to rumble in Shelby County through 10 AM. Flash Flood Warnings are in effect through 10:45 for Jefferson and 11:00 AM for Shelby.
