TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: Strong storms with torrential rain will move over much of Alabama this evening; in this kind of pure tropical air storms can drop one inch of rain in only 15 to 30 minutes, and some local flooding problems could develop. We will maintain the chance of showers and storms through the night as a cold front approaches the state.
TOMORROW: We will keep the chance of showers going tomorrow, but it could be that by midday the best chance of rain will shift to areas south of Birmingham ahead of an outflow boundary, and by tomorrow night a nice surge of dry air moves into the state.
THE WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEK: Looks like an extended period of dry weather for Alabama beginning Saturday. The weekend still looks wonderful with sunny days, clear nights, low humidity, and cool mornings for August. The cooler valleys have a great chance of reaching the 50s at daybreak Sunday; the 12Z GFS is printing 61 for Birmingham. Looks like highs only in the mid 80s; very comfortable for August in Alabama. The dry air stays in place, and much of next week looks rain-free as well with slowly rising humidity levels after Monday.
BILL: Anyone remember the song “My Girl Bill” by Jim Stafford? If you don’t, that is probably a good thing. That just popped into my head; we played that back on WTBC in the mid 1970s when I was a teenage disc jockey. I have no idea why. Hurricane Bill is undergoing a little shear, and top winds are now 120 mph, a category three storm. No change in the forecast track; Bill will pass west of Bermuda, and east of the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. over the weekend, reaching the Canadian Maritimes as a category one hurricane late Sunday or Sunday night. Huge swells and waves are likely along the upper half of the Atlantic Coast, from the Outer Banks of North Carolina north to Maine. A hurricane watch has been issued for the island of Bermuda since hurricane force winds extend out 105 miles from the center.
