Late this afternoon, North and East Alabama was dry as a bone. Only about the SW one-third of the state was getting showers and thunderstorms.
This included some strong thunderstorms from Sumter County in West-Central Alabama southward to the Mobile area and eastward into South-Central Alabama. The storms were moving SE.
At 5:40 p.m., it was pouring rain in Sumter County around the Livingston area. That is near the Mississippi border. Also, some heavy rain along the Alabama/Florida border. 1.34 inches of rain has already fallen at Mobile Regional Airport.
WIND DAMAGE IN MOBILE
It was probably a wet microburst. We have had a number of those around Alabama lately. It struck suddenly this afternoon around 2:21 p.m. It hit the side of a Wal-Mart store at I-65 and Airport Boulevard in Mobile. The air conditioner was blown off the roof and part of the store was unroofed. There were several injuries–some reports say as many as 15 injuries. Around 3:30 this afternoon, Bel Air Boulevard, near the malls, and Airport Boulevard, was underwater.
