TYPICAL SUMMER AFTERNOON: This is just you expect on a hot summer afternoon in Alabama… a few strong storms on radar, but scattered in nature. The heavier storms around 3:00 this afternoon were over North and East Alabama, but they are moving southwest. The stronger storms could produce some small hail and gusty winds; they should begin to fade later tonight after the sun goes down. It won’t rain everywhere, but some spots are getting a very good downpour.

NWS Huntsville issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Lauderdale and Colbert counties around 3:00 due to a strong storm near Muscle Shoals and Florence.

Away from the storms, the weather is hot with mostly mid 90s around this part of Alabama. Birmingham reports 95 degrees at 2:00.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: No real day to day change. Partly sunny, hot days with the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Afternoon highs stay generally in the mid 90s.

NEXT WEEK: The good news is that the idea of a pattern reversal is still on the board, and supported by the 12Z model runs. The center of the heat dome moves over the western half of the nation, while some nice heat relief is ahead for the eastern states. Here in Alabama, we expect an increase in the coverage of showers and storms at least for the first half of the week with a surface front stalling out just to the north. Also, heat levels drop; the GFS is printing highs only in the upper 80s Monday through Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend with a few scattered showers and storms around; highs on the coast between Panama City west to Gulf Shores will be in the 87 to 90 degree range. Sea water temperatures remain in the mid 80s. And, there is no sign of any tropical trouble anytime soon; the Atlantic basin is quiet.
