EARLY SUMMER HEAT WAVE: A number of North and East Alabama cities actually saw some decent rain with the last night’s thunderstorm complex; those storms dissipated early this morning. While a storm or two might pop up later today, hot weather continues to be the story. Birmingham’s official high yesterday was 98 degrees, which tied the record for June 15. We rise well into the 90s today, making it the 20th consecutive day with a high of 90 or higher.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge actually gets stronger, which means heat levels will increase a bit, and storms will be even fewer in number. Look for hazy sunshine each day with highs in the 95-100 degree range. Most of the weekend will be simply hot, dry, and dusty.
NEXT WEEK: A strong upper trough moving in from the west will beat the heat ridge down by mid week, with there is some optimism that showers and storms will become more numerous by Thursday and Friday with heat levels backing down. As always in a persistent heat pattern like this, you believe it when you see it, but the model consistency has been good in the idea.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Delightful weather continues. Expect sunny days and fair nights through early next week along the coasts of Northwest Florida and Alabama with only isolated showers. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with 90s inland. The sea water temperature on the Alabama coast was 85 degrees at 5:00 a.m.
TROPICS: No sign of any tropical trouble for now as the Atlantic basin remains quiet.
