We’re just plain stuck with a weather pattern that will keep us cloudy and wet through early Wednesday before we rush back into winter. With a southwesterly flow aloft and a series of disturbances moves through the flow, it’s going to keep things gray and cloudy with morning fog in places. But with that also comes mild weather.
The rain and thunderstorms yesterday evening left us with about a quarter to a third of an inch of rain – a nice rain and the first one of 2009.
Look for scattered showers today and Monday before the big show on Tuesday. A strong short wave will eject from the Southwest US on Tuesday and bring a round of thunderstorms to Central Alabama. And some of those storms could be severe with much of Alabama within the outlook area of the Storm Prediction Center. Current forecast output suggests conditions favorable for a few tornadoes, so you can be sure we’ll be watching these developments carefully as they unfold.
Timing for this system looks prime for us with the main weather passing through here during the afternoon and evening hours.
Following the potential severe weather will come a blast of cold air. While the clouds are likely to hold tough on Wednesday, it is shaping up to be one of those day when the temperatures fall or change very little with readings in the 40s or lower half of the 50s, depending on where you are in Central Alabama.
Slight moderation occurs on Thursday and Friday with dry weather before the next system attacks us late Friday and Saturday. But it still looks relatively cool. The Saturday system should zip through quickly paving the way for a dry and cooler Sunday. It appears now that the GFS has removed any possibility of a winter weather event for the Southeast, something we noted yesterday.
About the best thing to say about the long range projections is that the pattern remains very progressive with a continued serious of upper air disturbances coming every few days. I think you can bank on that for now no matter what the details are.
