HEADED FOR THE 80s: With an upper air high nosing into Alabama from the south, we figure temperatures will rise into the mid 80s today with a decent amount of sunshine. The air is relatively dry this morning, and with warmer air aloft moving in we have to figure most of today will be dry, with only a few isolated showers popping up this afternoon.

Tomorrow should be even warmer, and more humid. The GFS is printing 88 degrees here tomorrow afternoon, not far from record levels for early October. You have to mention some risk of an afternoon shower tomorrow, but I get the idea most of the day will be dry. Showers and storms will become widespread tomorrow night; the latest GFS run hints it might be after midnight, which bodes well for the high school football games, but that is no promise.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday looks very wet with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely Friday night and Saturday, with locally heavier amounts possible. Severe weather should not be a major problem with the air being rather stable. The rain could end from northwest to southeast Saturday evening. Drier air seeps into North Alabama Sunday; it still looks like the best chance of showers Sunday will come over the southern half of Alabama; we will mention just an outside risk of a stray shower Sunday around here.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most high school stadiums tonight will be rain-free, with only a slight risk of a shower. Temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 70s during the games. For tomorrow night’s games; showers are certainly possible, along with the possibility of a thunderstorm. But, it is beginning to look like the most widespread rain will come in after the games are over. Temperatures once again will be in the 70s, and we still suggest you take along the rain gear. Saturday, Auburn is at Arkansas for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff. The sky at Fayetteville will be delightful; the game will be played under a sunny sky with kickoff temperature near 62 degrees, rising into the mid 60s during the game. Alabama is also on the road; they will play Ole Miss at Oxford Saturday at 2:30; the sky will be mostly cloudy with a passing shower or two possible during the game. The kickoff temperature will be near 68 degrees, falling into the low 60s by the final whistle.

NEXT WEEK: Showers are possible statewide Monday as a wave of low pressure forms on the old front to the south, then cooler and drier air sets in Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest GFS run keeps the coolest air north of Alabama, but lows should reach the 40s by daybreak Wednesday.

VOODOO LAND: The GFS keeps the idea of a deep upper trough over the east in place at mid-month; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: Henri is now a tropical depression in the Atlantic northeast of the Leeward Islands, and will dissipate today due to strong winds aloft. The rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet.
