An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

JUST LIKE SUMMER: Seems like we jumped right from winter to summer in recent weeks… an upper ridge across the Deep South will bring highs in the mid 80s to the state today and tomorrow, with some spots reaching the upper 80s for the first time this year. The ridge also means sunshine in full supply both days.

LATER THIS WEEK: A deep upper trough will bring an end to the warm weather, at least temporarily, on Thursday. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 00Z GFS brings in a band of showers and storms in here early Thursday. We note SPC has a standard, slight risk of severe weather out Wednesday for areas west of the state, but considering the fact that the storms will be passing through here during the early morning hours Thursday, that will prevent a significant chance of severe weather. Seems like the main window for showers and storms will come from about 2:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Should the storms come through later in the day, the risk of severe weather will be higher. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely.

And, Thursday will be much cooler with a high only in the mid 60s. Some communities up in Northwest Alabama could hold in the cool 50s all day, quite a contrast to the recent warmth.

FRIDAY MORNING: Seems like we won’t have a problem with a widespread freeze; the GFS is printing a low of 42 for Birmingham Friday morning. But, we all know this isn’t a “one number” kind of place on a clear, calm morning. The colder valleys will clearly have a chance of frost Friday morning, and some spots could briefly reach the 32 degree mark. Growers in the colder valleys and pockets across the northern half of Alabama will need to keep an eye on forecast lows and make necessary plans. But, again, most places will stay above freezing.

WEEKEND PEEK: Looks like another delightful weekend, with sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the 70s.

LONG RANGE: The GFS hints at a chance of showers and storms Tuesday of next week; we will monitor that system for potential for severe weather in coming days with a negative tilt trough and a fair amount of instability ahead of the trough.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. This week’s new show will be recorded tomorrow night; Jeff Lazo from NCAR will talk about the societal impacts of weather and how meteorologists are using the power of social scientists to improve their forecasts and the warning process.
