RIGHT NOW: Our forecast is right on track; Birmingham is reporting 81 degrees at 3:00 with a cloudless sky, and a dewpoint of 46. Our warmest day of the year. Anniston is one of the warmer spots with 82. Down on the Gulf Coast, we notice that Destin is only at 68 degrees due to the cool sea water temperatures.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: We stay warm and dry tomorrow with a high back in the low 80s and a good supply of sunshine. Then, we will deal with a narrow and fast moving band of showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon. Watch the Weather Xtreme video, and you will see the RPM moves a line of showers through the state Saturday, generally between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. It looks like most places will only see about 1/2 hour of rain, with amounts of 1/4 inch or less. The GFS is printing only 0.04″ for Birmingham, while the NAM shows 0.14″. Needless to say, this won’t be a big rain event.

We do note that surface based CAPEs rise to almost 2,000 j/kg during the afternoon hours when the line moves through, so some thunder is likely. But, the main dynamics will lift well to the north of Alabama, and hopefully that will prevent a major severe weather threat. But, you always have to watch any system like this in early April.

Easter Sunday looks warm and dry with ample sunshine and a high in the low 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Generally dry and warm weather continues on Monday and Tuesday; there might be enough low level moisture for a few isolated showers, but we won’t mention that in the forecast for now. A cold front will bring a band of showers and storms late Wednesday or Wednesday night, followed by cooler air Thursday and Friday. Watch the video and you will see the 12Z GFS does not really pump up a western continental ridge to tap cold air, and accordingly that run really doesn’t show much of a frost or freeze threat. However, the idea is still on the table, and we encourage growers to keep an eye on the forecast in coming days.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
