DRIER DAYS: The rain has ended this morning for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Gadsden. Rain continues, heavy at times, to the southeast, where flash flood watches remain in effect this morning. I checked my rain total here in North Shelby County, and I have 2.01″ for the last 24 hours. Other totals from our Skywatcher chat this morning include 3.10 at Fayette, 2.28″ at Center Point, and 1.50″ at Springville.
The weekend storm system did pretty much as we expected. All of the serious weather was west of Alabama, where major, long track tornadoes were a problem over Arkansas, North Mississippi, and West Tennessee. The heaviest rain was also in this area; most of you know Nashville is dealing with flooding of almost Biblical proportion. Here in Alabama, there was no significant severe weather, and our rain totals were generally in the two inch range, with the exception of Northwest Alabama, where amounts were heavier.
REST OF DAY: Morning clouds will give way to a partly sunny afternoon. The weather stays warm; we should reach the mid 80s.
MID-WEEK: Get ready for a summer preview… this is May, after all. Highs will be in the upper 80s tomorrow, and many places around here will have a chance of touching the 90 degree mark for the first time this year on Wednesday. Both days will be dry with a good supply of sunshine. I don’t see any real reason for Thursday to be any cooler; the high will be in the 87 to 90 degree range. We do note a warm front will be moving northward Thursday, but moisture is very limited and for now we have opted not to mention any chance of rain in the forecast.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A strong short wave will pass well to the north of Alabama Friday; SPC has defined a risk of severe weather from near Nashville north to the Great Lakes region. Here in Alabama, the trailing cold front could kick off a shower Friday night, but with very limited moisture and dynamics, rainfall, if any, should be very light and spotty. The weak front will stall out Saturday, and then move north Sunday as a warm front. But again, dynamics are weak, and we expect nothing more than widely scattered showers over the weekend. I don’t rain will be a big issue for anything outdoors; certainly no issues this time with heavy rain or severe weather. The weather will be a little cooler over the weekend with highs back in the 70s.
LONG RANGE: Seems like the mid-latitude westerly winds aloft, or the stock track, will shift a little north of Alabama, so at this point we don’t see any major severe weather or heavy rain events for the next couple of weeks. But, we all know this is voodoo land and that could easily change.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
