RIGHT NOW: Strong storms continue over parts of Central Alabama… the heaviest ones around 3:30 were over Elmore County, between Rockford and Wetumpka. Other storms are over Autauga, Lowndes, and Dallas counties. These storms are moving “backwards”… slowly to the west/southwest at about 10 mph. The northern third of the state is dry, and should remain dry through the night with warmer air aloft capping any showers that try to form.

Here are two damage reports from Birmingham NWS office on the storms…

BMX: 3 Ene Eclectic [Elmore Co, AL] emergency mngr reports TSTM WND DMG at 02:46 PM CDT — numerous trees down. one tree on a house along double bridge ferry road. additional roads in the area blocked due to fallen trees.

BMX: 3 S Martin Lake At Kowa [Elmore Co, AL] emergency mngr reports TSTM WND DMG at 02:44 PM CDT — multiple trees down along governors island bridge road.

Birmingham is reporting 94 degrees at 3:00… the dewpoint is 65 and the heat index is 96. Not as hot as forecast by the models… we can thank the good soil moisture that remains in place, and that was reinforced by the thunderstorm mass that moved through the state on Saturday. I still think MOS products are too hot for the rest of the week.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: No major changes; hot, humid days with only isolated storms through Thursday, and highs in the mid 90s. Showers and storms could be a little more active Friday afternoon with deeper moisture and a slightly weaker upper ridge, but you know our limitations with forecasting afternoon convection in the summer in Alabama.

WEEKEND WEEK: For now it looks like a very routine summer weekend, with partly sunny hot days, fair nights, and some risk of a shower or storm during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs should be in the 91 to 94 degree range Saturday and Sunday as the hot weather continues.

GULF SHORES: We received this note from James Beasley with Stratus Station this afternoon… thought you might like to read his report…

“Matt McCracken (on vacation in Gulf Shores) said the beaches were beautiful and anyone that changed their vacation plans had made a big mistake. He did see some “tar balls” out in the ocean but everything was very nice otherwise. There is hardly any wait at any of the eating places. He said that he would give it the grand test at Lamberts tomorrow. If there’s no wait there, then that settles everything!”

TROPICS: Wind shear is relaxing over the Caribbean, and conditions are a little more favorable for 93L in the eastern Caribbean. Disorganized convection has increased, and we will have to watch developments down there closely. You get the idea the tropics are a powder keg right now just waiting for the first upward pulse across the Atlantic basin. The ECMWF has backed off on the idea of a Mobile Bay tropical system at the end of the month, now it moves the system toward the southern tip of Texas. But, we all know that is voodoo…
