ONE MORE GLOOMY DAY: A familiar scene around here this morning… low clouds, fog, and drizzle around the I-20 corridor. And, temperatures remain mild with readings generally in the 57 to 60 degree range at 5:00 a.m. To the south, widespread rain continues over South Alabama where flash flood watches remain in effect. Some folks down there have received over 5 inches of rain during the past 24 hours, and a few severe storms even bubbled up yesterday afternoon.
COLDER AIR BLOWS IN: Still looks like a day with temperatures going the wrong way as a cold front passes through this morning. See the progression of 5:00 a.m. temperatures:
Birmingham 61
Muscle Shoals 51
Memphis 41
Little Rock 35
Wolf Creek, Montana -33 (that is no typo!)
Look for temperatures falling into the upper 40s by mid to late afternoon with a chilly north wind. Clouds will hang tough, but rain and drizzle should end by midday. The sky will clear tonight, and by tomorrow morning most places around here will be in the 27 to 31 degree range.
THE REST OF THE WEEK: Look for seasonal temperatures tomorrow through Friday; highs in the 50s and lows mostly in the low to mid 30s. A wave in the Gulf of Mexico will bring clouds in here Thursday afternoon through Friday, but it still looks like the rain with this feature will stay way down south, over the southern quarter of Alabama.
COLD WEEKEND: A fresh shot of colder air moves into the state over the weekend, with highs dropping into the 40s and lows in the 20s. The GFS is printing a high of only 43 degrees Sunday, and is probably too warm. I get the idea parts of North Alabama won’t get out of the 30s both days, so you will need to bundle up. Both days look dry with a mix of sun and clouds.
CHRISTMAS WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video for a day by day walk through. The ensemble approach suggests a couple of things… Christmas Day could be very cold, and there is potential for a Gulf type storm just before Christmas at mid-week. Yep, probably just rain, but for those of you dreaming of a White Christmas all of the players are on the field. Best looking maps for at least some hope in years. Stay tuned.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
