ONLY LIGHT RAIN THIS MORNING: Earlier this week it looked like we had potential for 1/2 to 1 inch of rain today, but model runs through the week have looked drier and drier, and they are right on the money. A weakening band of showers moved into Northwest Alabama early this morning, and intensities continue to decrease on the radar as the showers encounter drier air over Alabama. And, the showers are way ahead of schedule.
Bottom line is that the rain is now over for places like Hamilton and Russellville up in Northwest Alabama, and it looks like the showers will be over for Birmingham by 8:00 this morning. All of the rain should be into Georgia by late morning, and it now looks like we will enjoy a bright sunny afternoon as the sky clears rather quickly. Tonight will be clear and cool with a low in the upper 40s.
THE WEEKEND: No doubt tomorrow will be a delightful day, with a sunny sky and a high in the upper 70s. Sunday, however, is now in question, as both the GFS and the NAM want to bring moist air back into the state, and suggest some risk of showers during the day. Let’s confirm this on the 12Z runs before we make the change in the forecast; just be aware that the idea of a few showers is now on the table for Sunday.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Should be a great night for high school football tonight; the sky will be generally clear with temperatures in the mid 60s at kickoff, dropping into the 50s during the second half of the games. Tomorrow, Alabama will be in Kentucky for an 11:21 kick off. About 58 degrees at kick off and warming slowly into the lower 60s. There will be clouds around, but no significant chance of rain. Auburn is in Knoxville to play Tennessee for a 6:45 kick off. The sky will be mostly clear with 65 degrees at kick off and dropping to around 48-50 at the final whistle.
NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS shows a fairly moist airmass in place Monday and Tuesday with a chance of scattered showers and storms both days. While the high Monday will be in the 70s, we should reach the low 80s on Tuesday as a summer-like upper ridge noses in from the south. Last night’s run shows a cold front passing through Wednesday with a good chance of showers and storms, followed by drier and cooler air on Thursday and Friday.
TROPICS: Nothing too serious out across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
