A CHANCE TO DRY OUT: A cold, dry airmass covers Alabama this morning. Temperatures are below freezing over the northern third of the state; some spots are in the mid 20s. We expect sunshine in full supply today with a high between 48 and 51 degrees for most North/Central Alabama communities. Tonight will fair and cold again; we will see another freeze early tomorrow morning. Continue reading
Sunshine Returns Tomorrow and Saturday
RAIN IS OVER; CLOUDS LINGER: Rain has moved out of Alabama this afternoon, but clouds linger. As expected, temperatures have been falling, and we are seeing mostly 40s now over the northern half of the state, with 50s over South Alabama. Continue reading
Rain Ends This Morning; Sunshine Returns Tomorrow
TRENDING DRIER: Rain lingers, mainly over the eastern half of Alabama early this morning. The rain will continue to taper off from west to east in coming hours, and by afternoon any lingering showers will be over the southeast counties of the state. Severe Storms Possible Tonight; Sunshine Returns Friday
ACTIVE WEATHER TONIGHT: A cold front will bring the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms to Alabama tonight. While instability values remain somewhat marginal, there will be sufficient dynamic support for a few storms to reach severe limits over the northern half of the state. SPC maintains the standard “slight risk” (level 2/5) down to Linden, Calera, and Spring Garden, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) defined as far south as Spanish Fort, Greenville, and Lafayette. MILD/BREEZY DAY: Today will be a mostly cloudy, mild, and breezy day for Alabama with a few passing showers; temperatures will reach the upper 60s and low 70s this afternoon with a gusty south wind of 12-25 mph by afternoon. With saturated soil conditions, and many creeks and streams out of their banks, a flash flood watch remains in effect for roughly the northern half of Alabama. But, rain amounts during the day today should remain under 1/4″ inch for most communities. Continue reading
Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow Night
RADAR CHECK: Rain has been increasing across Alabama again over past few hours as a nearly stalled stationary front continues to be draped across the central part of the state. Back in the colder air north of the front, temperatures are only in the upper 40s in places like Cullman and Haleyville, but to the south low 80s are reported at Montgomery. We will forecast periods of rain tonight; amounts should be generally under 1/2 inch over the next 12 hours. Continue reading
Flash Flood Watch Continues; Not As Wet As Yesterday
RADAR CHECK: A band of steady, light to moderate rain is on radar at daybreak from near Aliceville to Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston, otherwise the sky is cloudy with temperatures generally in the 60s. NWS offices in Huntsville and Birmingham continue a flash flood watch for roughly the northern half of the state today, but the good news is that the rain won’t be as heavy or as widespread as yesterday. Additional rain amounts over the next 24 hours should be around 1/2 to 1 inch. Of course, creeks, streams, and rivers remain swollen, and in some cases out of the their banks. Continue reading

FLOODING CONTINUES: Soaking rains continue to fall across the northern half of Alabama this afternoon, and flash flood warnings remain in effect for at least a dozen counties. A flash flood watch will remain in effect overnight as the big rain event continues to unfold. Some spots have already seen over three inches of rain so far today, and additional amounts of 1-2 inches are likely tonight. Some roads are impassable due to flooding, and if you come across a flooded roadway, remember, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN! Continue reading
