Potential For Record Warmth This Week
HOLY HIGH AMPLITUDE: A very high amplitude upper air pattern is setting up over the continental U.S. this week… a very cold upper trough will be over the western states, but we will be influenced by a strong upper high over the east. This will set up blowtorch warmth over the eastern and southern states this week, with potential for record warmth. Continue reading
Warm Today; Back In The Deep Freeze Over The Weekend
BIG CHANGES AHEAD: We project a high in the low 70s today, almost 20 degrees above average for January 11, and not far from the record high of 78, set in 1949. Quite the contrast to the weather on this date in 1982, when Birmingham dropped to -1F, one day before a crippling ice storm started. Continue reading
Scattered Showers; Warm Weekend
RADAR CHECK: Showers are widely scattered across Alabama this afternoon, otherwise we have a layer of broken clouds with temperatures mostly in the 70s. There is a risk of stronger storms to the west over North Mississippi in coming hours; some of those could drift into Alabama late tonight, but they should be weakening and no severe weather is expected in our state. But, we will bring in a chance of showers late Sunday and Sunday night ahead of a cold front. Nothing too heavy or widespread; rain amounts will be under 1/4″ for most places. Continue reading
Cold Front Pushing Through North Alabama
DRIER AIR MOVING IN: Not too hard to find the cold front over North Alabama this afternoon… at 3:00, south of the front, Birmingham reported 86 degrees, while north of the front Muscle Shoals was at a cool 68. The front is passing through in dry fashion; there is no rain on radar at mid-afternoon. Continue reading
Drier Air Filters Into Alabama Later Today
FOGGY START: We have a dense fog advisory up for the southern two-thirds of the state early this morning; visibility is under 1/4 mile in some spots. The fog will dissipate by mid-morning; otherwise expect a partly sunny sky today with only isolated showers… most places will be dry. And, the weather stays warm with a high in the 80s. Continue reading

STILL DRY TODAY: One more dry day for Alabama; we expect a good supply of sunshine today with a high in the mid 80s this afternoon. But, all eyes in the weather office will be focused on Tropical Storm Nate, now in the western Caribbean with winds of 45 mph. Continue reading
Tropical Storm Nate Headed Our Way
WARM OCTOBER AFTERNOON: Quite the warm-up across Alabama this afternoon. Tomorrow will be another warm, dry day with a high in the mid 80s for most communities. Continue reading
