Fall Arrives; Still Feels Like Summer
HELLO FALL: The equinox was at 3:02p CT… today is the day we have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Of course, this is Alabama, and often we don’t really enjoy the first good front of fall until October, and we will stay warm for the next 5 to 7 days. Continue reading
Fall Arrives Today; Still Feels Like Summer
THE DAY OF THE EQUINOX: The autumnal equinox is today at 3:02p CT… that is when the sun will be directly over the equator, and we have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. And, while fall “officially” arrives, it will still feel like summer with temperatures reaching the upper 80s again today. And, like recent days, a few showers and storms are possible this afternoon and early tonight, but they should be widely separated. Continue reading
The 21st Night Of September
TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: No change, as the upper ridge over the eastern U.S. holds. Partly sunny, very warm days, fair nights, and isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet each day is only about one in five. Highs remain mostly in the upper 80s. Continue reading
Warm, Muggy Weather Through The Weekend
UPPER RIDGE HOLDS: Looks like we will be locked into a warm, humid weather pattern through early next week, and we are going to roll with a persistence forecast for the next five to seven days. An upper ridge over the eastern half of the nation means summer-like weather hangs on; partly sunny days, fair nights, and just a few isolated showers or storms during the afternoon and evening hours. Continue reading

FOGGY START: We have a dense fog advisory in effect this morning for much of Central and East Alabama; some of the lowest visibilities are in places like Anniston and Gadsden. Conditions will improve by mid-morning. An upper ridge will keep Alabama very warm for the rest of the week with highs in the 87-90 degree range most afternoons. Continue reading
Warm, Muggy Days; A Few Afternoon Storms
TYPICAL LATE SUMMER WEATHER CONTINUES: An upper ridge will stay over Alabama for the next 7-10 days, meaning this classic late summer weather will continue. We project a high today in the 87 to 90 degree range with a partly sunny sky. A few showers and storms will form this afternoon and early tonight; they will be random and scattered… the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in four. Continue reading
Warm; A Few Scattered Showers… Eyes On Jose/Maria
RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are almost impossible to find across the northern half of Alabama this afternoon. We are seeing just a few isolated showers over the central counties moving to the south; those will dissipate once the sun goes down. Temperatures are well in the 80s, and Tuscaloosa has hit 91 degrees this afternoon. The average high for September 18 (based on data from Birmingham) is 85 degrees. Continue reading
Warm Days For Alabama; Tropics Remain Active
SUMMER HANGING ON: The “official” end of summer is four days away; it happens at 3:02p CT Friday when the sun is directly over the equator, the autumnal equinox. We have some fairly routine late summer weather this week with warm afternoons, high humidity, and the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Continue reading
