An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

MAKING THE LOOP: The most interesting feature on the board this morning is the tropical low south of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, formerly known as Tropical Depression Five. This system produced some very generous rain amounts of much of Alabama over the weekend, and now has the potential to regain tropical depression status later today over the warm water.

Most models bring this back inland over Southeast Louisiana in about 24 to 36 hours, with a curve back to the north, and then northeast during the mid-week period. This keeps Alabama on the moist, east side of the circulation, so we will have the opportunity for at least scattered showers and storms on a daily basis for the next 5 days. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the QPF chart shows potential for over 4 inches of rain for Northwest Alabama, with amounts of 1 to 2 inches elsewhere through Friday. Of course, we all know rain distribution won’t be that even, but no doubt we will have a good chance of more badly needed rain across our state this week.

TODAY: We expect a high in the mid 90s today with developing showers and storms in scattered spots this afternoon. The chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three.

REST OF THE WEEK: We will have a risk of scattered showers and storms on a daily basis through Friday, and they could become rather numerous at times Wednesday and Thursday with the old tropical low coming at us again from the southwest. Highs will stay mostly in the low 90s, which is where we should be for mid-August in Alabama.

STREAK STILL ALIVE: While most of our Skywatchers around the Birmingham metro reported highs only in the 80s Saturday, the Birmingham Airport (where the records are kept) did manage to touch 91 for a few minutes, meaning today should be the 43rd consecutive day with a high of 90 or higher. The record streak rolls along…

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: Other than the low south of the Florida Panhandle this morning, the rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet this morning. We figure the African wave train will crank up shortly and get the season really rolling.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Tonight we will discuss the National Weather Service, and the use of social media. Should be an interesting show; it will be on iTunes and the web by midnight.
