A wedge of slightly cooler is pushing into Alabama from the east this afternoon. This has helped to disperse the smoke from the Georgia wildfires, and will knock about five degrees off afternoon highs around here tomorrow and Friday. While the cooling will be most noticeable near the Georgia border, we do expect maximum temperatures to drop into the 81 to 85 degree range around Birmingham. And, needless to say, the weather will remain dry.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: No real change in our thinking; mostly dry and warm for the Southeast U.S. over the holiday weekend; highs around here will be in the 80s with lows in the 60s. The Gulf Coast looks dry, although the 12Z GFS hints that a few isolated showers might show up Sunday or Monday. If they do, it should not be a big deal.
NEXT WEEK: Finally a different look on the 12Z run of the GFS for next week. It brings a copious amount of Gulf moisture northward into Alabama on Wednesday, and suggests scattered showers and storms will be possible by then continuing and increasing in coverage on Thursday and Friday. And, instead of developing a tightly wound up tropical storm, it moves a broad low pressure area into South Georgia by the following weekend (June 2-3) with generous rain for much of Georgia and Florida. At this point we must consider this run of the GFS a outlier, but at least it offers a glimmer of hope for some badly needed rain around here.
