Strong thunderstorms continue early this afternoon–most of them in a cluster over East-Central Alabama. The NWS had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for part of Tallapoosa and Chambers Counties until 1:15. In fact, one of those storms showed a slight indication of rotation.

In Chambers County, the EMA Director reported nickel-size hail five miles north of Lafayette at 1:00 p.m. Many of those storms are producing dangerous lightning and strong gusty winds.

Within the last few minutes, NWS/Birmingham added a Significant Weather Alert for Lee County in East Alabama, as well as Cleburne and Calhoun Counties in NE Alabama. The Central Alabama thunderstorms were moving almost due east. The ones in NE Alabama were moving more toward the SE.

There were several thunderstorms over Cherokee County and another one was crossing the Calhoun County line into Cleburne County and will move toward Heflin.

Several thunderstorms were also in Dallas County and others between Selma and Montgomery. The Montgomery area may get some rain out of those. A small moderate to heavy shower popped up NW of Birmingham, but it has weakened.

A Significant Weather Alert means strong thunderstorms, but it falls just short of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
