That’s what we all are during this exceptional drought and there is some encouragement, at least across Alabama’s northern counties this afternoon.
At 1:30, there were scattered showers and thunderstorms over the extreme north, especially from Marion, Winston, Cullman and DeKalb County northward.
Some good rainfall amounts in the last several hours over NW Alabama in Colbert and Franklin Counties. One of the heavier showers, along with some thunder and lightning, was over West Winston County west of Double Springs.
NWS/Huntsville issued a Special Weather Statement. They did that concerning some thunderstorms over West Jackson and Eastern Madison Counties. These storms were slow-movers toward the south and could produce over 1 inch of rain per hour and strong gusty winds and dangerous lightning.
Another strong storm was over DeKalb County west of Ft. Payne.
This summary does not mention all of the showers, by any means, just the main ones. There will be times this afternoon and tonight when local NWS forecast centers will issue those Special Weather Statements. They are usually issued for situations that fall short of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Flash Flood Warning.
GREATER BIRMINGHAM AREA
Still dry at 1:30 p.m. in Jefferson County. The nearest shower was west of Jasper in Walker County. The overall movement seems to be slowly SE, but the storms around Huntsville and Ft. Payne were moving almost due south.
