Lots of factors coming together for some severe weather but even as I write this there are still some questions. One of those big questions is how far north the really deep moisture and unstable air can surge. Also at this writing, lower 60-degree dew points were into the Mobile area. We’ll be watching that closely. In the meantime another factor that could play a role is the thunderstorms which moved through the area during the early morning hours.
SPC does have the southern two-thirds of Alabama outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather. I believe our greatest threat of severe weather will come from 10 am to about 6 pm. And I think the best conditions will exist from Birmingham south and southwest into Southwest Alabama. But as we’ve seen in several recent systems, this one will be blasting by quickly. In addition to the half inch of rain some spots got this morning, one half to one inch of rain is possible with additional storms today.
We dry out tonight and Saturday – at least the rain ends even if clouds do stick around to some extent. But rain returns again of Sunday when we could get another 1 inch of rain. All of the rain at the end of 2007 could throw the year into the second driest year on record in Birmingham.
An Arctic weather system promises to bring some very cold weather to Central Alabama as 2008 begins with lows Wednesday morning around 20 degrees.
Further into voodoo country there is still some rain threats as a new long wave trough develops off to the west. Rain episodes are possible around the 5th and 9th as the Southeast modifies from the cold episode on the 2nd.
The Blog folks will be watching the present weather situation and posting new information as it comes available. I should have another Weather Xtreme Video Saturday morning around 9 am or so. Have a great day and God bless.
