CHILTON COUNTY: Lots of buzz on the blog about the small spin-up tornado down in Chilton County late this morning; scroll down for the picture (thanks to Dan Wright for forwarding that to us). No warning from the NWS on the storm; and in their defense a warning for this kind of small tornado in a tropical rain band is almost impossible. By the time you receive the report, in most cases, the tornado is gone. Damage in Chilton County is very minimal.

If you try to catch every small spin-up in situations like this, then you will have literally hundreds of tornado warnings, and most of them won’t verify.

AUTAUGA COUNTY: The NWS has issued a tornado warning for a similar tropical shower over Autauga county as I write this… the rotation on radar was not too far from Billinsgley. A few more tornado warnings are possible this afternoon and tonight, but SPC indicates they won’t be issuing a watch, and this is nothing like the spring and fall severe weather setups we have around here. We will be watching the radar closely.

THE DAYS AHEAD: No change through the weekend. The ocean of humidity hangs around at least through Sunday, with the stacked low to the west. Each day we will highlight occasional showers and thunderstorms, and the HPC guys suggest additional rain totals of 3 to 4 inches. Look for a few flash flood warnings along the way, but a major, widespread flood event is not likely. Highs will be in the low 80s each day, and you will need the rain gear for high school and college football games. We will have the specific football forecasts tomorrow morning.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS bring a slightly different idea for the middle of next week; the upper trough is not really phased, and the core of the cool air stays north of Alabama during the latter half of the week. Still, we expect a noticeable change to drier weather by the end of next week. And, still some risk of severe weather on Tuesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: All is quiet for now… on this fifth anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Ivan on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
