SUN RETURNS TEMPORARILY: Today’s forecast package is working out nicely. Following the pre-dawn storms, drier air has taken over, and the sky has become partly to mostly sunny over the northern counties of the state with temperatures mostly in the low to mid 70s. The sky will be generally fair tonight, and tomorrow promises to be a much warmer today as an upper air high noses in from the south. Both the GFS and the NAM are projecting highs in the mid 80s tomorrow with a partly sunny sky and only isolated showers. Most of the day should be rain-free.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: To the west, the upper troughs over the Southwest U.S. and Canada will phase up, and the cold front associated with it will bring a chance of developing showers Friday afternoon. Showers and storms are likely Friday night and Saturday, with potential for one to two inches of rain statewide. Rain is a definite possibility for the high school football games Friday night (lightning and thunder possible as well), and the GFS is slower with the surface front, so much of the day Saturday looks wet now.

Sunday, the weight of the cold air over the northern U.S. should nudge the surface front down to Montgomery, and it looks like the northern half of the state will be rain-free Sunday, with the showers over the southern counties of the state. Highs over the weekend should be in the low to mid 70s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are a bit early with that this week because so many people will be travelling out of state to Oxford and Fayetteville. It does not look good for high school games here in Alabama Friday night. A good chance of showers and storms still in progress at game time. In college football Saturday, Auburn will be at Arkansas for an 11:00 a.m. game. We believe Fayetteville will have fair dry weather, rather cool with a high only about 62. Alabama will be in Oxford to play Ole Miss in a 2:30 kick off. It should be near 68 degrees at kick off with some rain possible. We will fine tune this product tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS suggests a surface low developing on the surface front south of here Monday, and brings showers up into Alabama, especially the eastern part of the state, so we will leave a chance of showers in the forecast. Then, a nice surge of cooler and drier air drops into the state on Tuesday and Wednesday; these two days should feature a sunny sky with cool temperatures.

VOODOO LAND: All model madness at mid-month with every run of the GFS looking different, so no clear cut solution at this point. See the Weather Xtreme video for the 12Z GFS look…
