Saturday was a very wet day across Alabama with just about everyone getting some rain – watch the video for a graphic from the precip estimate from radar. Today is going to remain unsettled, too, with showers and thunderstorms likely, however there are some changes coming that could snap us back to the reality of summer.
The upper trough continues to move slowly eastward and should be perched on the Eastern Seaboard by Wednesday. Besides the movement, the trough will also be pulling a bit to the north lessening its hold on the Southeast. This should translate to another relatively wet day today, but while the air mass does not really change, the lessened influence of the trough should be enough to end most of the rain. Because we do remain moist, I can’t rule out an isolated shower or two Monday and Tuesday, however, I think most of us will be dry. Temperatures remain in the 80s for highs today, thanks to the showers and clouds, but look for a warm up Monday and Tuesday.
By mid-week, a weak impulse riding through the flow could elevate the rain possibilities to at least scattered and we’re likely to remain that way into the weekend. The bad news, though, is that a very large and strong upper ridge is now being forecast to build across the Southeast into the North Central US. This is going to elevate temperatures, too, and remind us that it is still summer and August. While the upper high will help to limit showers, daytime heating and the presence of low level moisture will mean the daily possibility of afternoon and evening showers along with hotter temperatures.
SPC has outlooked several areas along the Eastern Seaboard, the Panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas, parts of Wisconsin and South Dakota, and even the southern part of Oregon – just don’t see areas outlooked there too often. But the tropics remain quiet as we edge closer to the most active period of hurricane season.
Voodoo country has flipped – wow, what a surprise!! It now keeps a very, very, very strong ridge across the eastern half of the country. Strictly from a climate point of view, that’s probably a good solution, but I do like the unusually strong trough we’ve had for the last couple of weeks. I vote to bring the trough back!!!!
