THIS AFTERNOON: The average high for Birmingham on March 22 is 68 degrees… but today at 2:00 the temperature is only 49 degrees. Looks like we will make the low 50s, but it sure doesn’t feel like spring. Radar continues to show light rain over Central Alabama in a broad band from near Eutaw to Montgomery to Eufaula.
We will maintain the chance of some light rain at times tonight statewide.
STORMS OVER THE WEEKEND: A warm front pushing northward from the Gulf of Mexico will mean occasional showers during the day tomorrow. It won’t rain all day, but it could rain at any time during the day, and temperatures will be warmer with a high in the mid 60s.
SPC maintains their standard “slight risk” of severe weather for much of Alabama tomorrow night, but the higher 30 percent probabilities are south of U.S. 80, over the southern counties.
A review of the 12Z model runs still shows the higher instability values over South Alabama. But, the NAM tries to bring 60 degree dewpoints up toward the I-20 corridor after midnight tomorrow night into early Sunday morning.
The primary window for severe weather will come from about 8:00 p.m. Saturday through 8:00 a.m. Sunday. The main risks for North Alabama will come from hail and straight line winds, although an isolated tornado is not out of the question. Severe weather should be more widespread over the southern counties of the state.
Showers and storms will end Sunday morning, and the day will be windy and cooler with the potential for falling temperatures during the afternoon following the passage of a cold front. A little light rain or drizzle is possible during the afternoon, but nothing really widespread or heavy.
NEXT WEEK: The weather will be cold and dry, with temperatures well below average for late March. Freezing temperatures are likely early Tuesday and Wednesday morning; coldest temps should come early Wednesday with 20s possible. I doubt if we get out of the 40s Tuesday despite a sunny sky. The weather will begin to warm up later in the week Thursday and Friday afternoon.
VOODOO LAND: The GFS still advertises a potent weather system in here around the first of April… see the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics, maps, and details.
AT THE BEACH: Severe storms are possible on the Gulf Coast late tomorrow and tomorrow night… showers will end early Sunday. Next week looks rain-free, but cool with highs only in the low 60s. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 62 degrees.
