Another great day underway for Central Alabama. This is the kind of weather you really want to see on Saturday or Sunday and not Monday, but we did have two good days over the weekend. And it looks like the warm, dry weather will continue into the middle of the week. It would appear that our next chance of rain will come on Thursday, perhaps late afternoon on Wednesday, as the system now over Texas moves our way. But there are visible signs that moisture is slowly on the increase, so we might see a scattered afternoon show but they will be few and far between.
That system has been slow to move and the GFS maintains that trend. The upper system moves through the Southeast on Thursday as it weakens and phases up with a trough in the stronger westerly flow along the US/Canadian border. The phasing of these two systems will bring us back to the reality of winter. But March cool-downs don’t typically last a long time, so we will see a couple of cool days for our next weekend before temperatures recover. We could see some of those normally cooler locations flirt with freezing on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
In the longer term we stay relatively dry. The GFS is now beginning to hint at a strong system toward the end of the month. That suggestion was made yesterday and it is still there on the 12Z run today. The long term solutions suggests severe weather threat around March 28th, but that is a long way out to be very specific. We’ll watch the trends and see how the whole pattern evolves with time.
I really do not expect the next system Wednesday/Thursday to bring much rain – but we could sure use some rain. I’ve only registered 0.41 inches – less than half an inch – at my house, and the Birmingham airport is only slightly better with 0.47 inches of rain. The airport has a monthly deficit of 1.63 inches while the annual deficit is approaching six inches (5.73″ to be exact). So rain is definitely on my wishlist.
