CALMING DOWN THIS MORNING: After a long night of severe weather, conditions will improve across Alabama this morning as the storms exit into Georgia. You can scroll down for a detailed look at last night’s storms… seems the most significant damage in this part of the state was in Winston County, between Haleyville and Double Springs, and in the eastern part of downtown Cullman. And, last night’s storms brought hailstones the size of baseballs to parts of the state, including Dora/Sumiton in Walker County where some car windshields were shattered.
Technically a tornado watch is in effect for parts of East Alabama until 9:00, but the severe weather threat for Alabama will be generally over by 7:30.
The sky will become partly sunny today with a high in the low 80s in most places.
TOMORROW: It will be a warm, breezy, and humid day with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures tonight will stay above 70 all night, and we will warm well into the 80s tomorrow giving the weather a more summer feel. The NAM, in fact, is printing a high of 88 degrees tomorrow. This seems a little too warm, but highs in the 82 to 85 degree range are certainly possible in a summer-like setting like this.
To the north, a very deep surface low will explode near the Canadian border, with a trailing cold front down into the mid-south. SPC has defined a severe weather risk all the way from the Central Gulf Coast north to the Great Lakes, including most of Alabama. Our best chance of strong to severe storms will come tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night, with potential mostly for hail and high winds, although an isolated tornado is not out of the question.
The higher severe weather probabilities tomorrow are actually north of Alabama, where the dynamic support and shear will be better.
WEDNESDAY: The surface front will still be north of Alabama, so we will have to mention scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms with a high at or over 80. And, once again, a few strong storms will be possible in this moist and unstable environment.
THURSDAY: Cooler and drier air finally begins to flow into Alabama, as the sky becomes partly sunny and the high drops down into the low to mid 70s. We will down around 40 degrees by daybreak Friday, with 30s for the colder spots.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A big weekend ahead, with everything from Halloween to NASCAR fun at Talladega to football… the weather looks great with mostly sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights. The high Friday will be only in the 60s, with 70s Saturday and Sunday.
LONG RANGE: The GFS hints that showers and storms could return early next week, followed by another shot of cool and dry air by mid to late week. Lots of model madness in the longer range, out in voodoo land, giving little confidence to a specific forecast. See the Weather Xtreme video for some ideas.
