Central Alabama is waking up to a gray sky this morning with very warm temperatures, but fog is the big news across the southeast sections of the state as well as South Georgia and North Florida. Many sites were reporting visibilities of a quarter of a mile or less. A dense fog advisory was in effect for parts of the Florida Panhandle, Southwest Georgia, and South Alabama. Across Central Alabama we had low clouds but visibilities were not significantly reduced. Clouds should break up by late morning with some sun this afternoon as highs climb into the mid and upper 70s. The morning temperatures were dancing around 60 degrees which is about 20 degrees higher than we typically expect for early March.
The big feature for us for the next several days will be a strong ridge firmly planted across the Southeast US. The ridge gives way a bit Sunday was a strong short wave trough advances over the top of the ridge, but the ridge builds back in strongly on Monday. A front zone will be lingering just to our northwest which might help to generate isolated showers in extreme Northwest Alabama Sunday through Tuesday, but for the most part I think the ridge keeps us dry in Central Alabama. And it will be warm with morning lows in the upper 50s and afternoon highs in the mid and upper 70s.
Another upper trough swings by on Tuesday and Wednesday and this one should be enough to nudge the front down into our area with good chances for rain and showers, maybe even a thunderstorm. For now the GFS is suggesting Thursday will be a cloudy but mostly dry day. Friday another short wave traveling through the flow should bump a front through Alabama clearing the way for a nice weekend. Temperatures will fall back slightly to values closer to early March averages.
Watch the video to see the surprise the GFS has in voodoo country! Could there be another cold core low and snow event on our horizon? If the GFS is right that might happen around March 16th-17th – but it is voodoo and that feature could well be gone on the next run. Fun to watch, though, and I would not mind another snow event like we just saw. The GFS suggests a quick recovery with more rain possible around March 21st.

I plan to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 am Sunday morning. Really enjoyed reading to some 6th graders at Berry Middle School yesterday as part of their read-a-thon. Reading is such a wonderful thing and can really fuel the imagination and mind! Enjoy the day. Godspeed.
