The high of 76 at the Birmingham International Airport yesterday tied the record high for the 19th previously set in 1986, so it was a warm day. And the warmth just rolls along as the Southeast US remains under an upper ridge which will keep it warm until Tuesday. So look for highs to once again reach the middle 70s across Central Alabama with some spots edging into the upper 70s. The record today for the high at Birmingham is 78 also set in 1986, so it is going to be a close call on tying that record.
We should stay dry Monday morning but a fast moving flow will propel a short wave by to our north which could bring some spotty rain/showers to the area, but I believe what rain does occur will be short-lived. Rainfall amounts are likely to be a tenth of an inch or less.
We dry out Tuesday but cool back down from the tremendous warmth as the upper ridge sticks with us but somewhat dampened in magnitude. Temperatures will be noticeably cooler but fall back to about what we expect for the latter part of February.
Wednesday is dry with a slight warmup before the next system heads our way on Thursday morning. This system appears fairly potent with an area of the Central US outlooked for possible severe weather by SPC on Day 5. The area from Northeast Texas to West Kentucky is the primary threat area. While we might see a thunderstorm or two, it appears that the dynamics are not good enough for severe weather in our area. That’s still five days out, so we’ll be keeping an eye on it to see how the overall conditions develop. Nice to see the various models getting closer in their respective solutions, too.
That system should zip by by Friday afternoon opening the way for a nice weekend. But Sunday we begin to see the development of a major storm system which could impact Central Alabama on Monday, February 28th. This one currently looks very impressive and will bear close scrutiny.
Voodoo country shows no signs of letting up with respect to active weather. A continual series of short waves will keep the weather active as we get into the first week of March.
