WARMING UP: After an unusually cool day yesterday (Birmingham’s high was only 59 degrees), we begin to warm up today as an upper ridge begins to build across the Southeast U.S. We project a high today in the 81 to 84 degree range with a partly sunny sky. The tail end of the energy ejecting out of the Southern Plains could trigger a shower or two over the northern third of the state this afternoon, but we the showers could be widely spaced and most places won’t get wet.

For the rest of the week, tomorrow through Friday, afternoon highs will be generally in the 87 to 90 degree range with a good supply of sunshine each day. Humidity levels will rise as well, but the chance of rain will be very low thanks to the capping inversion and the upper ridge. It will feel very much like summer.

THE WEEKEND: A weakening surface front will drift down this way for the weekend, and we will need to mention just a chance of a shower on Saturday. But, showers will be few and far between, and most of the day will be dry with a high in the mid to upper 80s. Showers should begin to increase Sunday as an upper trough approaches, but even then we won’t expect a wash-out. The high Sunday afternoon should be in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Showers and storms should become more numerous Monday and Monday night as the upper trough supports a surface cold front. Then, the rain begins to taper off Tuesday as the trough moves on to the east. For now it still doesn’t look like an especially heavy rain event, and a major severe weather problem is not expected. The rest of next week for now looks calm and dry. See the Weather Xtreme video for more ideas on long range weather through the rest of May.

OKLAHOMA TORNADO OUTBREAK: What a great forecast by the guys at SPC yesterday with the high risk. At least 5 people are dead in Oklahoma due to the tornado outbreak, and many more are injured, some critically. The excellent warnings no doubt saved many lives.
