WARM IS THE WORD: High pressure aloft will slowly build across the Deep South this week, setting up warm temperatures, and an almost summer-like weather pattern.

TODAY: A surface front will approach North Alabama… ultimately stalling out somewhere around the Tennessee Valley. The upper low supporting the front is weakening and lifting northeast toward the Great Lakes, so with weakening upper support, we don’t expect any severe weather issues today, although a strong afternoon storm can’t be ruled out.

Early this morning as I write this, most of the rain in Alabama is between Selma, Camden, and Jackson, down in the southwest part of the state. Up this way, most of the showers and storms will come later today during the peak of the daytime heating process this afternoon. The high today will be up in the mid 70s.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The surface front will wash out, and with high pressure aloft in place, the week will be warm, with daily highs between 77 and 83 degrees. And, there will be sufficient moisture and instability for the risk of “scattered, afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”, those words you hear just about every day in summer. It is impossible to tell you several days in advance, or really one day in advance, exactly where the showers and storms will form… they tend to be very random in nature, and most likely during the warmest part of the day.

RECORD HIGHS? The GFS is printing highs between 79 and 82 every day between tomorrow and the weekend… our daily record highs are generally in the mid to upper 80s this time of the year… doubtful we get that warm. But, it will be close. The daily record is 84 Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (March 14, 15, and 16).

WEEKEND PEEK: No real change…. as the summer-like pattern continues. Warm and humid Saturday and Sunday. Partly sunny both days, with just a few widely scattered afternoon and evening showers. Highs will remain in the 77-83 degree range.

LONG RANGE: Medium range computer guidance still shows no sign of any late season cold snap that would bring a freeze threat to our state. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

AT THE BEACH: Spring break crowds will enjoy some pretty decent weather on the Gulf Coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores. They will have to deal with a mass of showers and storms this morning, but generally speaking for the rest of the week we are expecting mostly sunny days and fair nights, with only a very small risk of a shower. On the immediate coast, the high will be near 70 due to the cooler ocean water (water temperatures are generally in the upper 60s now), but inland the high will be in the mid to upper 70s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record this week’s episode tonight at 8:30 p.m. CDT… Kevin Harned of WAVE-TV in Louisville, KY will be joining us this week.
