* 90 mph is how high the wind gusts were late yesterday at Turnagain Arm west of Girwood, Alaska (near Anchorage). A raging blizzard was under way at the time. Todd Foisy sends this information. He is on the staff of the NWS Anchorage. He is a Birmingham native (Huffman) and graduated from the University of Utah. Todd, if you happen to read this, do you happen to know what the low so far this winter has been in Peter Sink. That unique geographic feature is high up in Logan Canyon in NE Utah. As the name implies, it is a sink or depression located at high elevation. They once had a low of 69 below zero, which came within one degree of the all-time low for the lower 48 states, which was 70 below zero at Rogers Pass, Montana in January 1954.
* 18 below zero was the temperature in Watertown, New York this morning–the coldest in the lower 48.
* 85 was the warm spot yesterday at Pomona, California.
* 82 was the temperature at midday in Kingston, Jamaica and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands if you are interested in warm weather.
* 31 below zero was the temperature on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire this morning with wind gusts to 75 mph. They have had gusts to 85 in the last 24 hours.
* 79 below zero was the wind chill on Mt. Washington.
* 10 was the mid-morning temperature at Provincetown out on Cape Cod with NW winds gusting to 41 mph and the wind chill 12 below zero. The entire NE is getting a dose of real cold weather.
* 1 above zero was the temperature in Worcester, Massachusetts with a wind chill of 23 below zero.
* 1/2 inch is all the snow that New York City has received so far this winter (Central Park). Last year at this time, they had received 12 inches.
* 9 feet was the height of the waves reported by a data buoy SE of Cape Cod this morning. The temperature was 17 with winds to 38 mph. How would you like to be out there in a small rubber raft with all those waves and ocean spray?
* 40 below zero was the coldest at Chandalar Lake, Alaska this morning.
* 61 inches is how much snow is on the ground at Valdez and 43 inches in Nome.
* 87 inches is the snow depth at Whittier, Alaska today (that is not counting drifts).
* 35 was the low in Cut Bank, Montana this morning making it the warmest minimum temperature on record for this date. An amazing turn around in temperatures in parts of the Northern Rockies.
* 78 degrees was the range in temperature across Montana in the last 24 hours, ranging from a very warm 65 at Ft. Benton and Ryegate yesterday afternoon to 13 below zero this morning at West Yellowstone.
* 25 inches is how deep the ground is still frozen at Popular, Montana.
