That’s what we used to call it in Havana Junction when there was a variety of contrasting weather information. First, let’s make a quick tour of the places hardest hit by recent winter storms:
OKLAHOMA CITY
Today’s high of 28 will be followed by a low tonight of 10. There is a slight chance of snow Wednesday, but sunny and warmer on Thursday getting all the way up to 42 Thursday, which will feel like spring by comparison.
CHICAGO
Clear and very cold tonight with a low of 5 to 10, but with a wind chill of 5 below zero. Sunny, but cold, Wednesday with a high of 25. Dry weather continues on Thursday with a high of 32.
DENVER
Clear tonight with a low of 3 to 9 above zero. Sunny Wednesday with a high in the 30s in the lower elevations, but 20 in the mountains. Mostly sunshine Thursday with a high of 28 and a low Thursday night of 12. No significant snow threats any time soon. The low at Denver International Airport this morning was 4 above. The coldest in Colorado was 31 below zero at Craig in the NW part of the state.
HOUSTON
Believe it or not, an Ice Storm Warning tonight and early Wednesday. A good chance of light freezing rain and sleet tonight with a low of 28. It will change to all rain late tomorrow morning with a high near 38.
FT. WORTH-DALLAS
Chance of a few flurries tonight, but no accumulation. Low near 28. Wednesday a slight chance of snow during the morning with a little light rain during the afternoon. High of 38.
SALT LAKE CITY
High this afternoon 22, but dry. Clear tonight with a low of 5 to 10. High Wednesday 23 and high Thursday 20. Dry weather during all that time. 49 inches of snow on the ground at Alta in the Wasatch Mountains SE of Salt Lake. It was 19 below zero this morning at Vernal and Delta, Utah and 18 below at Alpine.
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
30 below tonight in the mountainous part of the park. Low this morning was 31 below at the west entrance to the park (West Yellowstone, Montana). No significant snow expected for the next several days.
ST. PAUL ISLAND, ALASKA
This is our pick location for where you would not want to be today. At 11:00 a.m. Alabama time, they had 25 degrees with snow and blowing snow and NE winds gusting to 53 mph. You would have to line your cap or hat with Velcro to keep it from being blown off. I am extremely fascinated by St. Paul Island, because a few years ago they had a thunderstorm in the middle of the night. It was so rare that some of the natives–even adults–had never seen lightning or heard thunder before and they were really frightened.
ELSEWHERE IN ALASKA
33 inches on the ground at Nome with a low of 16 below. The coldest was Barrow with 26 below. We want to watch the small town of Whittier. They have very unusual weather and tons of snow. They have 81 inche son the ground today.
MT. WASHINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE
We haven’t checked in there in quite some time. Late this morning they had 6 below zero with a wind chill of 42 below. The wind was NW up to 62 mph and visibility was only 1/16th of a mile in fog. That means they are in the clouds and that fog is freezing on impact coating the place with ice.
CHURCHILL, MANITOBA
That’s another place that is high on my list to visit, but I will never make it. They are located on the SW shore of Hudson Bay and that is where some of the coldest air in Canada is entrenched. It was 36 below there this morning. Churchill is billed as the Polar Bear Capitol of the world. There is a smaller bay that protrudes SE of Hudson Bay called James Bay. Temperatures were 45 below zero this morning on the east side of James Bay.
FINAL NOTES
10 below zero this morning in Brewster, Kansas.
24 below at Meeker, Colorado.
Ground frozen to a depth of 25 inches at Popular, Montana.
Over and out. According to a story ont he front page of the Lifestyle Section of the BIRMINGHAM NEWS this morning, I should take a nap. I will beg Little Miss Molly to let me borrow my ex-recliner for only 30 minutes.
