Our weather pattern is going to seem like a broken record over the next week as the Southeast US remains firmly planted under the influence of a large ridge aloft. This will keep the weather warm and humid with daily isolated showers or thunderstorms. While the ridge does break down a bit by Monday as it retrogrades just a bit, it will remain the primary feature in the upper atmosphere. While the ridge does weaken a bit it will grow stronger again by the latter part of the week with the 594 height contour building once again just to our west.
The ridge with little appreciable change means that the daily heat with highs in the lower and middle 90s along with some daily isolated showers will be the forecast for the next week – somewhat monotonous as the pattern changes little. Also the morning lows will be quite warm with lows only dropping back into the 70s – values about 10 degrees higher than we typically see around the middle of June.
SPC outlooking an area for a slight risk of severe storms from Southwest Pennsylvania across the Central Plains arcing southwestward across the Texas Panhandle and into the Big Bend Country of Southwest Texas. That area shrinks a bit on Day Two extending from about St. Louis through Kansas and back into West Texas. The present pattern seems to be providing VORTEX 2 with a lot of good material as the project begins to wind down with the approach of the end of the project on June 15th.
Unfortunately, the long term GFS output does not show any significant change to the primary weather pattern. The ridge is forecast to maintain its integrity over the eastern half of the country while there seems to be a bit more unsettled weather showing up in the tropics. But this is all voodoo country.
For us in Central Alabama, keep the heat and humidity in mind as you plan and do things outdoors. Heat can be a major killer so please don’t under estimate its effects. Stay hydrated with lots of water and cool off frequently.
