Thanks to a spinning upper low in the vicinity of Jackson and Meridian will be the catalyst to keep our weather unsettled for the Memorial Day weekend. Just like yesterday, some of the thunderstorms could be severe with damaging wind the biggest threat. Coverage of thunderstorms should be fairly high through early next week especially today and Sunday, but not everyone will get rain each day. Cloud cover and thunderstorms will help to keep our temperatures down a bit with highs expected to reach the middle 80s for most locations.
The upper low sticks around in some form weakening by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This will keep the weather across the Southeast unsettled throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Lightning will be plentiful, so if your plans take you outside to the lake or the beach or whatever, be sure to practice good safety when lightning is nearby. Lightning is often referred to as the underrated killer, so don’t become a statistic and heed lightning safety precautions.
Rainfall amounts over the next several days will easily reach the 1 to 2 inch category but not for everyone. While coverage of thunderstorms is expected to be significant, there will still be some locations that get very little rain. My rain gauge missed out a lot yesterday with only 4 hundredths of an inch while just northwest of me spots had over an inch. Slow movement of the storms will also contribute to potentially significant rains in isolated locations which may prompt some flash flood warnings.
By Wednesday the upper low weakens allow a few less showers. Finally, the GFS suggests a strong trough with some good amplitude will develop Thursday and Friday and bring a cold front through the area Friday. This could usher in some cooler and dryer air paving the way for a nice weekend for the first one of June. My only concern is that we don’t typically see strong fronts coming through the Southeast. It’s not impossible but just not typical. I’ll stay with the GFS for now but I won’t be terribly surprised if future model runs arrive at a slightly different solution. If this solution is right, it would be a beautiful weekend next weekend.
