RIGHT NOW: We have a very mild late October morning across Alabama with temperatures in the 67 to 72 degree range. We continue to watch the large rain mass to the west; about the eastern half of Arkansas is under a flash flood warning now, with flash flood watches up all the way from Lake Charles to Chicago.

Most of the day today will be dry, although a shower could pop up in a few spots. The sun should break out at times, and we will warm to near 80 degrees. Gusty south winds will gust to 20 mph at times.

The leading edge of the rain will move into West Alabama late this afternoon or early tonight, and a few thunderstorms could be involved. The risk of severe weather seems minimal, as the best dynamic forcing will be well being the surface cold front back in the stable air. SPC has a small slight risk area for Central Mississippi and extreme West Alabama; we will watch radar trends, but everything seems out of phase for a significant risk. But, you know the deal, when it comes to thunderstorms expected the unexpected.

COOL, WET HALLOWEEN: Cooler air floods Alabama tomorrow, and it won’t exactly be a chamber of commerce day. Steady rain will fall through the morning with temperatures holding in the 55 to 60 degree range. The rain will end from west to east during the afternoon, and there is a reasonable chance the rain will be over by the time the trick or treaters hit the streets (but no promise!). The sky will clear tomorrow night, and Sunday still looks like a beautiful fall day.

NASCAR WEATHER: Rain is likely for tomorrow’s truck race at the Talladega Superspeedway with afternoon temperatures in the 57 to 60 degree range. Sunday looks perfect for the running of the Amp Energy 500 with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: I would recommend rain gear for tonight’s high school games, although stadiums over the eastern half of the state could be generally dry. Rain is likely and possibly a thunderstorm for the games over West Alabama. Temperatures will be mostly in the 60s at all venues. For tomorrow’s Auburn game against Ole Miss at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the weather will be cool and wet with periods of rain and temperatures in the 58 to 61 degree range. UAB will be way far away in El Paso playing UTEP at 2:00 p.m. It will be sunny with mid 60s most of the game. Now, the Magic City Classic—a very special occasion that is more than just a football game. It is tomorrow and it includes a parade and lots of other outdoor activities. Numerous people are already in town and are busy meeting friends and tailgating. The kick off is at 2:30 p.m. at Legion Field. You will need a light jacket and some rain gear. There is a good chance of some rain and the temperature will not get any higher than about 60 with a brisk northwest wind.

NEXT WEEK: The weather sure looks tame next week; dry weather is likely Monday through Friday with seasonal temperatures; highs mostly in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Fantastic fall weather.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

This morning I will be doing a weather program at Moundville Elementary down in Hale County… the afternoon Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so. Enjoy the day!
