It appears that the forecast is on track from our discussion yesterday with a wet Monday on tap for Central Alabama. Today we should see a noticeable increase in the clouds and moisture as dew points climb toward the upper 60s. The weak trough we’ve been following over Texas will make its way slowly eastward and phase up with a strong trough coming out of Canada on Tuesday. This action will result in a surface low moving along the Central Gulf Coast area while cooler and drier air heads our way for Wednesday and Thursday.
For today we already see a few patches of very light rain on radar, probably not much reaching the ground. Rain chances really blast upward tonight and Monday and Monday night with rainfall potentially in the 1 to 2 inch category with some heavier amounts possible especially over the eastern half of Alabama. Temperatures Monday and Tuesday will be held down somewhat by clouds and rain with highs each of those days staying in the 70s.
As the troughs phase up on Wednesday, look for a rather chilly morning on Thursday with lows in the 40s and lower 50s, one of the cooler mornings we’ve seen so far this Fall. With the upper trough well established over the eastern half of the country, we should stay dry through next weekend with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. A weak front is likely to bring some clouds Saturday, however, it appears that there will be little moisture for the system to work with, so little chance at any rain. We are headed toward October which is our driest month.
Looking into voodoo country, the GFS continues to show a fairly deep trough over the eastern half of the country as we enter October. This should keep our temperatures near seasonal averages or slightly below.
Tropics are still fairly busy as Nadine moves across the Central Atlantic toward the Azores. An area of disturbed weather is approaching the Leeward Islands but conditions are not conducive for development for the next 48 hours. This system will be entering the Caribbean, so it will bear some watching and conditions are expected to become more favorable for development in a couple of days. The position of this area of disturbed weather makes it a candidate to become a Gulf storm, so it deserves some attention.
