Looks like someone has opened the freezer this morning. I thought it was raining, but it was just the leaves rustling as the northwesterly flow has already picked up this morning with a cold front that will be ushering in some pretty chilly air today.
In fact, our high for the day may already have occurred. The Birmingham Airport reported 63 degrees just before 1 am and that could well be our 24-hour high as cold air advection sets up in a big way.
The cold front is coming through completely dry. Only a few clouds were evident on the morning infrared satellite view from the Birmingham area northeastward into Tennessee. And radars were clean, too.
A wind advisory is in effect until 6 pm this afternoon for the northwest wind at 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Plus there is a Red Flag Warning for critically dry fire weather conditions.
No rain prospects until next month either!
With the strong cold air advection, we’ll be watching how the wind behaves overnight tonight and Tuesday morning. Should the wind die off, we might come dangerously close to our first 32-degree reading of the Fall season. And Wednesday I’m pretty sure the wind will go calm with good radiational cooling which will also bring us down to the freezing mark.
