The National Weather Service offices in Huntsville and Birmingham have gone ahead and issued “Winter Weather Advisories” for roughly the northern half of Alabama starting at 8 PM.
This includes Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Cleburne, Clay, Calhoun, Etowah, Cherokee, Blount, Cullman, Walker, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Winston, Marshall, DeKalb, Jackson, Morgan, Marshall, Lawrence, Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale (AL), Limestone,and Madison Counties.
We are still expecting temperatures to be right at or just above freezing in metro Birmingham late tonight when the rainy, wintry mix moves in. There is a good chance, though, that areas northeast of Birmingham in the colder valleys (typical cold places, you know who you are) could be around 29-30 degrees which might cause some substantial icing on elevated surfaces and possibly even some roads by early Thursday morning.
